The global hydrogen generation market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.2% during the forecast period to reach USD 152.09 Billion by 2021. This growth is attributed to high demand for hydrogen as a cleaner fuel, government regulations for desulfurization of petroleum products, and decreasing crude oil quality. Hydrogen has potential applications in chemical processing, petroleum recovery and refining, metal production and fabrication, aerospace, and fuel cells.

The demand for hydrogen is the largest in petroleum refinery and ammonia production. On the basis of generation & delivery mode, hydrogen generation has been divided into captive and merchant hydrogen generation. The hydrogen produced is consumed by these manufacturers to produce the final end-user products. Captive production is expected to dominate the market till 2021. North America is the largest market for merchant hydrogen production.
