The low-intensity sweeteners market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.4% from 2015 to reach a projected value of USD 1.55 Billion by 2020. Rising demand for low calorie products and rising health awareness among consumer groups globally have boosted the demand for low-intensity sweeteners. Other factors such as the use of natural ingredients in the sweeteners production are also supporting the growth of the overall demand for low-intensity sweeteners. Compared to regular sugar, low-intensity sweeteners provide similar sweetness but with low calories when used in various applications.

The amount of low-intensity sweeteners use varies with the functionality and sweetness value across various applications. Beverages find a major application for low-intensity sweeteners, as there are different variants available which enable unique tastes and extend the shelf life of the beverage products compared to regular sugar. The production and consumption of low-intensity sweeteners is governed by various food regulatory organizations globally. Likewise, the trade of the low-intensity sweeteners is also influenced by the regulations.

Among the types of low-intensity sweeteners such as xylitol, tagatose, allulose, trehalose, and isomaltulose, xylitol accounted for the largest market share in 2014, followed by trehalose and isomaltulose. Xylitol is produced traditionally by both bark of birch wood and corn cobs. The use of corn cobs has increased in xylitol production in recent years. Due to xylitol’s unique functional properties, easy digestion compared to other low-intensity sweeteners, relative sweetness as that of sugar, low glycemic index and low calories, its demand has increased over the years.

The Asia-Pacific region dominates the low-intensity sweeteners market in terms of both volumes and growth potential followed by North America. Low-intensity sweeteners demand for confectionery will drive growth in the European region. In the rest of the world, Brazil will gain focus, being the highest supplier of sucrose which forms a major base feedstock for producing low-intensity sweeteners.

Strict rules and regulations have limited the production of low-intensity sweeteners in few regions. For example: Allulose is not permitted in Europe but has GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) status in the U.S. Higher cost of production of tagatose and allulose has also limited potential growth of the low-intensity sweeteners globally.

The low-intensity sweeteners market is dominated by Cargill Inc. (U.S.), Tate & Lyle (U.K.), Ingredion Inc. (U.S.), Roquetta Freres SA (France), and Sudzucker AG (Germany). These companies accounted for a major share in the market. Other players such as Purecircle Ltd. (Malaysia), Matsutani Chemical Industry (Japan), and Mitsui Sugars Co., Ltd have a minor share.
